Dr. Phodell J. Taylor was a Preacher, Teacher, Prayer Intercessor, Mentor, and influential leader who served with excellence as she inspired, encouraged, and empowered others to fulfill their divine destiny. Dr. Taylor has an immense burden for souls; to this end, God continues to use her to bring healing, and restoration to many. For over twenty-five years she dedicated her life to winning souls to Christ by reaching the heart with a message of hope, and deliverance through the transforming power of God's Holy Word.
Dr. Taylor is known for her exceptional ability to touch hearts with her dynamic; and practical teaching style that helps believers to apply the timeless truths of the Bible to their everyday lives.
Dr. Taylor, a native of North Carolina, was the youngest of eight siblings. She was married to the late Tyrone Urgent and later married the late Minister George E. Taylor. She is a devoted mother of three children, (Paula, James, and Tamara), grandmother of three (Tiara, Daniqa, and Quincy), and spiritual mother of three.
Dr. Taylor chose the medical profession as her life's vocation. She attended the College of New Rochelle. and New York City Technical College. where she graduated with honors as class Valedictorian. Throughout her career as a Registered Nurse, she specialized in various areas of critical care including ER, ICU, MlCU, SICU, CCU, NICU, Recovery Room, and the Open Heart Unit.
When God revealed His plan for her life her compassion for helping hurting people shifted from their physical needs to their spiritual needs.
Dr. Taylor accepted her call to ministry in 1979 and was ordained into the gospel Ministry in 1980 by the Church of Christ Written in Heaven, Brooklyn New York. This yielded vessel has been equipped to carry out the mandate on her life to preach the gospel under an Apostolic and Prophetic Anointing.
Dr. Taylor received theological training from the United Christian Seminary and Tabernacle Bible Institute. She holds the following earned degrees: Doctorate of Sacred Theology, Doctorate of Philosophical Theology, Master of Theology, Master of Religious Education, Bachelor of Theology, Bachelor of Religious Education, and Bachelor's and Master's in The Psychology of Counseling.
Dr. Taylor is a recipient of numerous honors, and awards including the Vivian F. Green Award, The Distinguish Ministry Award, The ELM Award; The TBI Most Inspirational Award; and the Peninsula Baptist Union Teacher of the Year award for 2017.
Dr. Taylor's desire is to please God and to fulfill the Clarion Call on her Life to be an anointed voice for the Kingdom. As you listened to her minister the Word of God with power and authority you heard a heart of genuine love that is totally sold out to God. Dr. Taylor faithfully served as an Associate Minister and Christian Educator at Colossian Baptist Church, Newport News, Virginia, where Rev. Dr. Peter A. Evans is the Senior Pastor.
When Dr. Taylor was not preaching or teaching, she enjoyed event planning and creating stunning tablescape designs that would elevate your entertaining and dining experience into a memorable event.
Dr. Taylor's life journey and Spiritual inspiration was taken from: Isaiah 61:1-3 "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound: to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; to appoint unto them that mourn In Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called tress of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.
Dr. Taylor is preceded in death by her parents, Minnie and Hugh Patterson, husbands, Tyrone Urgent and Min. George E. Taylor, and siblings, James “Jimmy”, William “Buck”, Orcelia “Bay”, Nathaniel “Nay”, Marion “Mern” and Douglas “Doug”. Precious memories will forever remain with her children, Paula Patterson, Jamesteven Patterson, and Tamara Love; grandchildren, Tiara, Murphy, Malik Murphy, Daniqa Love, and Quincy Love; brother, Calvin Patterson; and a host of nieces, nephews, church family, and honored friends.
A service to celebrate and honor Dr. Taylor's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 11, 2023, at Colossian Baptist Church. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.
