She fought a good fight; she finished her course. The Queen has gained her Crown!
On Thursday, October 10, 2024, our beloved Queen Elizabeth McCray Butcher transitioned to her eternal home surrounded by family. She was born on February 15, 1959, to the late John Lyons and Roxie McCray. Queen was also preceded in death by her brothers, Ronnie McCray and James McCray Sr., and sister Flora McCray.
Queen was educated in the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools. She worked at Shoney's Restaurant and the Newport News School system for over twenty years. Over forty years ago she accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined Mt. Ararat Baptist Church where she was a dedicated member. Queen served as Assistant Financial Secretary, Usher, Gospel Choir member, Pastor Aide Committee, as well as a part of the Hospitality Committee ministries. She would lend a hand wherever it was needed.
She leaves behind to cherish her wonderful memories her husband of eighteen years Samuel Butcher Jr.; daughters, Lashanda Coleman (Samuel) and Shanel McCray; grandchildren, Demond Lawrence and Deshawn Coleman; great-grandchildren Demarion Lawrence, Shaniyah Lawrence, and Demontae Lawrence; sisters, Cindy Holloway, Tammie Quarles (Anthony), Phyllis Nelson, Denise McCray, and Cassandra Washington; brothers, Lionel McCray, Woodrow McCray, and Phillip McCray (April); special children, who were near and dear to her heart, that she provided care to before her health started to decline, David and Skylar; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
