Quovadis Mae Cooke went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 18, 2025. She was born in Williamsburg, VA on October 25, 1934, to the late Elizabeth Webb Morning and William Henry Morning, Sr. She was a devoted wife to the late Isaac Frank Cooke, Jr. and mother to Floyd Morning (Jacqueline), Larry Morning, Iva Copeland, Ronald Cooke (Joy), Timothy Cooke, Gerald Cooke, Effie Thompkins (Robert), and the late James Cooke.
She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Williamsburg, VA, where she served as deaconess, member of the Women's Auxiliary, and enjoyed working as a missionary. She is one of the last members to walk from the old church location on Nassau Street to Scotland Street. Her deep admiration for God’s word led her to share with others His goodness and mercy.
Her love for family, spanning over four generations, and being a mother figure to those who grew up with her children, reflects her deep love and concern for others. She was a neighborhood babysitter and a community activist, often speaking about walking to Bruton Heights school and never riding on the school bus. She spoke up about several issues, including Wales Neighborhood. She also was an avid gardener who loved growing plants and sharing them with others.
She is also preceded in death by her three sisters, Maurice Johnson, Hazel Bostick, and Eunice M. White, and brothers, Horace Morning, Hugh Morning, William Morning, Jr., James Morning, John Morning, and Arthur Morning.
“Mae,” as she was affectionately called, leaves precious memories of love, generosity, and a warm heart to all that knew her. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Chinna, Seeta, Francisca, William, Alexan, Shekella, Shada, Shinese, Tito Sr., Ron, and Kierra; great-grandchildren, Jacary, Inndia, Tajah, Demiyah, Emir, Kelynn, Gemini, Kyell, Jacob, Emilia, Alexan Jr., Cadence, Tito Jr., Santio, Aubrey, Ayden, and Alannah; and a host of other loving relatives and caring friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at First Baptist Church. Interment to follow in Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Cooke may be viewed from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
