Reuben Reese Holmes passed away on November 16, 2024. He was a beloved father, husband, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Reuben was born on March 31, 1938, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he spent his formative years. He attended Armstrong High School before joining the U.S. Army in 1955 and serving through 1984. During his service, he was awarded the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Presidential Unit Citation, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Master Parachute Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and NCO Professional Development Ribbon. Shortly after, Reuben attended Fayetteville State University, where he received his degree in Sociology. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others. He was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement to others, no matter what challenges they faced.
Reuben moved to Virginia in January 2021 to live with his daughter and attended Senior’s First Choice Day Program where he enjoyed spending time with others and staying active. He was a man of honor and wisdom. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones and friends. His memory will be cherished by all.
He is preceded in death by his son Reuben Holmes Jr. and daughter Linda Holmes.
Reuben is survived by his loving wife Rutha Holmes; devoted daughter Pamela Thompon of Providence Forge, VA; grandchildren, Julius Holmes (Cheretta) of Tucson, AZ, and TJ Thompson of Annandale, VA; great-grandchildren, Jayden, Avery, and Bryson; and a host of family and special friends.
A service honoring his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 2024, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. Full military honors will be rendered. Mr. Holmes may be viewed beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the hour of his service.
