On Thursday, November 17, 2022, at 1:17 AM, the Lord called Ruby D. Buckhanon from her earthy home to eternal rest. She was born on March 25, 1939, to Jerry and Wanda Brown Washington, in Margaret, Alabama. She was the fifth child of ten children.
In 1962 she married the late Sammie L. Buckhanon Sr. This union was blessed with three children Sammie L. Jr., Nathaniel, and Angela.
Ruby was a graduate of Ashville High School in Ashville, Alabama. In her early years, she provided childcare in her home. She was also a diligent worker for several food service establishments in the Williamsburg area for over forty years.
She was a faithful and active member of Mt Gilead Baptist Church, serving as a Deaconess until her health began to decline. Her passion was serving and visiting the sick. She was a songstress within her own right, known for singing lead as she participated with several choirs. She looked forward to her weekly Bible Study Group that met at Golden Coral. Her most precious time was spent reading the word of God. She took her Bible with her everywhere she went.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry and Wanda Washington; siblings, Roosevelt Washington, Jerry Washington Jr., and Mary Evelyn Lavender; and adopted sisters, Dorothy L. Richardson and Hilda Potter.
She leaves to cherish her memories her children, Sammie L. Buckhanon, Jr. (Michelle), Nathaniel A. Buckhanon, Sr. (Cathy), and Angela M. Buckhanon Bartlett; eleven grandchildren, Nathaniel, Ashley, Izzy, Keyanna, Kendra and Kenya (twins), Jacob, Jada, Shawnta, Charles and Travis; five great-grandchildren, Autum, Taniya, Xavier, Mariah, and Liliona; six brothers, Elder Daniel Washington Sr. (Shirley), Minister William Washington (Margaret), Charles H Washington, Reverend George Washington (Anita), Samm Washington (Tess), and Booker T Washington; adopted sisters Jean Jones, Ella Dale, Joyce Easterling, Edith Wynn, and Barbara Cooper; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and friends.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at noon Friday, November 25, 2022, at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. Livestream will be available at the beginning of the service. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Ms. Buckhanon may be viewed on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until noon in the church. Facial coverings are required for all services.
