Samuel Emmanuel Stokes Jr., 63, of Newport News, Virginia, departed this life on Sunday, March 10, 2024. He was born on January 3, 1961, to the late Samuel Emmanuel Stokes Sr. and Rosa Lee Stokes in Newport News, Virginia.
Sam attended Denbigh High School and worshiped at True Vine Baptist Church. Sam had a fulfilling career as a Wastewater Operator for the City of Newport News and was also known for his culinary skills which led him to start Chef Sam's Down-Home Cooking.
In his free time, Sam enjoyed spending time with his loved ones and playing the Bass Guitar. He was also a member of the Arthur Bonds and The New Sunset Travelers.
He is preceded in death by his sisters, Patrica Stokes and Sandra Stokes. Sam will be dearly missed and forever remembered by the mother of his children, Rena Stokes of Newport News, VA; children, Samantha Stokes of Newport News, VA, Samuel Stokes III of South Carolina, Jermaine Winston of Fredericksburg, VA, and LaSheena Outlaw of Newport News, VA; grandchildren, Samiriah Stokes-Floyd of South Carolina, Jermaine Winston II of Fredericksburg, VA, and Charlie Evans of Newport News, VA; three great-grandchildren, Journey, Sage, and Atlas, all of South Carolina; siblings, Adam Eley of Chesapeake, VA and Melanie Stokes of North Carolina; two special nephews, Lawrence “Bubba” Stokes and Andre Dorsey, both of Newport News, VA; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services to honor and remember Samuel will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2024, in True Vine Baptist Church, Newport News.
