Sarah Isabell Smith Obituary

Sarah Isabell Moore Smith peacefully entered into eternal rest on Sunday, September 20, 2020, in Queens, New York, with her daughter Lorri and grandson Ben by her side.  She was born on October 12, 1925, in James City County Virginia to the late William Henry Moore and Sarah Dandridge Moore.

Sarah attended Bruton Heights School.  She accepted Christ at an early age and became a devoted member of Zion Baptist Church until her health began to decline.

Sarah has lived in Boston and New York.  She was married to the late Nelson Smith.  “Isabell” as she was called, was a homemaker, with a pleasant demeanor, and was caring and kind to those who knew her.  She was also a caregiver to children of many friends and family members, and a beautician to others.  In addition to family and friends, neighbors visited Isabell’s home frequently, where she loved preparing hot meals for them.  She became known for her famous home-made rice pudding, potato salad, and sweet potato pie.  Her presence will be deeply missed. We know that our loss of an angel is heavens gain, and we have faith in God that we will meet her again.

Sarah was preceded in death by her son, Charles David Moore; sisters, Elizabeth Jenkins, Lillian Robinson, Virginia Frazier, Mary Moore, and Helen Myers; one brother, Herbert Moore; and nephew, Larry Moore,   She leaves to cherish blessed memories with her daughter, Charlotte Lorri Moore Ellis; grandson, Benjamin Ellis III; granddaughter, Lorri Cristel Ellis; nieces, Carolyn Roane, Irene Wells, Charlotte Moore, Karen Frazier-Bey, Beaulah Roane, Sylvia Moore, and Ann Moore; nephews, William Henry Moore, Hezekiah Frazier, Robert Moore, John Moore, Herbert Moore Jr., and Raymond Moore (whom she raised); great-nephews, Monte Moore and Rondell Moore; favorite great-nephews, Nathaniel Moore, who lived with her for many years until marriage, and Terry Tabb; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon Tuesday, September 29, 2020, at Whiting’s Funeral Home.  Due to the current health pandemic, only 50 people may be in attendance.  Face coverings and social distancing are required.  Facebook Livestream will be available for this service.  Mrs. Smith may be viewed on Monday, September 28, 2020, from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
