Sherman William Jones Sr. was born on January 18, 1932, to the late Sherman A. and Viola Baker Jones. He entered into eternal rest on February 6, 2025, in Williamsburg, Virginia.
At an early age, Sherman became a member of Chickahominy Baptist Church, where he confessed Christ as his personal Lord and Savior and was baptized. He later joined Little Zion Baptist Church, where he served in the Men’s Choir and was a member of the Trustee Board.
Sherman was raised in Toano, Virginia, and attended Chickahominy Schools from 1938 to 1945. He graduated from Bruton Heights in 1949. From 1952 to 1954, he honorably served in the United States Army. Sherman later worked at The Naval Weapon Station for fifty years, followed by four years of employment at The College of William & Mary.
On April 21, 1952, he married the love of his life, Edith Washington. Unto this union, they were blessed with two sons.
Sherman was the most kindhearted and affectionate person. He showed love to everyone he met, especially his grandchildren who affectionately called him 'Big Daddy.”
He is predeceased by his wife of over sixty years, Edith Mae Washington-Jones; and sisters, Eudora Hawkins, Virginia Jones-Cox, and Edith Jones-Tyler.
He leaves precious memories with his two sons, Sherman W. Jones Jr. and Ramon Jones; grandchildren, William Hines (Tracey), Marcell Jones (Tamara), SheQuita Davis (Darryl), Sherman Jones III (Saraid), and Shemar Jones; four great-grandchildren, Christian, Jessica, Gabrielle, and Zavion; special friend of ten years Lillian Taylor; goddaughter Patrice Boyd; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
A funeral service to celebrate Sherman's life will be held at Noon on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at Little Zion Baptist Church. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Jones may be viewed on Wednesday beginning at 11:00 a.m. until the hour of his service in the church.
