Shirley Jimmerson Baker

With hearts full of gratitude for a well-lived life, we celebrate the radiant legacy of Shirley Jimmerson Baker. Shirley was born on January 11, 1940, to the late John Nicholas Jimmerson and Lucille Bartlett Allen. In the fullness of His wisdom, God ordained Shirley’s arrival on this earth and, in His tender mercy, received her into eternal rest when her appointed season was fulfilled

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Samuel Baker, her uncle Samuel Jimmerson (Veldra), and her cousin Henderson Bartlett, whom she loved as a father and brother.

A proud graduate of Bruton Heights School, Class of 1957, Shirley was crowned Homecoming Queen, a reflection of the joy and dignity she carried even in youth.

Shirley was known for her grace, strength, and faith, serving Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in many roles. She sang in the Senior Choir, participated in the Joy Fellowship bible study, served on the Usher Board, and supported the Pastor’s Aid Ministry.

Her commitment to justice and community was equally profound. Shirley was a Life Member of the NAACP, a proud member of the Million Dollar Club in 1982, 1987, and 1995, and was once crowned the local NAACP Queen, a title befitting her unwavering advocacy.

She was equally devoted to the revitalization of Forest Heights, the community she proudly called home. Serving as a trusted liaison between County officials and residents, Shirley worked tirelessly to ensure that voices were heard, concerns addressed, and progress pursued. Her efforts left a lasting imprint on the neighborhood she cherished so deeply.

Professionally, Shirley served with excellence and dignity as Housekeeping Manager at the College of William & Mary, retiring after 30 years of faithful service. Her contributions were recognized with the Black Faculty and Staff Forum Award, a testament to her leadership and impact. 

In the broader community, Shirley’s voice and presence graced countless gatherings as Mistress of Ceremonies for gospel events throughout Williamsburg and neighboring counties. Her signature phrase, “If you don’t move it, you’ll lose it,” became both a playful nudge and a gentle reminder toward purposeful living.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and wisdom, cherished by her son, Darrell Jimmerson (Mary); daughter, Tonya Robinson (Michael); sister-cousin, Ella Bartlett; and beloved cousin, Vinetta Robinson.

Her joy continues through her grandchildren: Darrell Jr. (Tiffany), Tamara Jimmerson, Faith Robinson, Storie Veihl (Larry), Tyra Lenix, and eleven great-grandchildren.

She is also lovingly remembered by a host of cousins whom she cherished as nieces and nephews—many of whom affectionately called her “Aunt Shirley.”

As we bid farewell to a woman of grace, conviction, and unwavering faith, we hold fast to the promise that her labor was not in vain. Shirley Jimmerson Baker walked in purpose and left footprints of love across every life she touched.

A service to celebrate her beautiful life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 19, 2025, at Bethel Restoration Center.  Interment to follow in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.  Mrs. Baker may be viewed on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.  Per Shirley's wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Building Fund at 4002 Ironbound Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
