Sonya Y. Askew-Martin

On Friday, May 5, 2023, an angel appeared before Sonya Y. Askew-Martin and ushered her to her eternal home. Sonya departed this realm with her daughter and friends surrounding her in love. She was born on March 30, 1964, to  Rose Barnes and Joseph Askew Sr., in Portsmouth, Virginia.

At an early age, she was a member of the COGIC family, where she was a talented musician and singer. She served our country by joining the magnificent United States Marine Corps and parted ways as a Corporal as she exhibited an ever-increasing degree of maturity, leadership, and professionalism. She was a highly intelligent woman and a Christopher Newport University college graduate, where she pledged to be a sister of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. 

She is preceded by her sister, Roser, and father, Joseph Sr. Sonya leaves to cherish fond memories her daughter, Tealece; mother, Rose; brother, Joe; sister, Mildred; and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and friends.

A memorial celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Whiting's Funeral Home. Livestream will be available at the beginning of the service.
