Terry Gray Sr. Obituary

Terry Wayne Gray Sr., age 67, formerly of Williamsburg, Virginia, peacefully departed this life on April 1, 2026, at Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center after a period of declining health.

He was born on September 14, 1958, to the late Herman Henry Gray and Thelma Holmes Gray. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dolly Gray Crews, and his brothers, Charles Gray and Ronnie Gray.

At an early age, Terry accepted Christ and joined Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Williamsburg, Virginia.

He was educated in the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools system and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1977. After graduation, Terry went on to honorably serve his country in the United States Army.

Terry was a devoted chef who found great joy in sharing his love of cooking along with his expertise at various establishments throughout Williamsburg. Even as his health declined, he continued to delight others with his talent and passion at Mama Steve’s.

He loved the outdoors and took great pride in caring for his yard and displaying antiques he had collected over the years. Terry found peace by the water, often with a fishing rod in hand, frequently sharing those special moments with his son, “Lil Terry.”

His love for music was evident in his vast collection of records and cassette tapes. He had a remarkable voice and enjoyed sing-alongs, knowing the lyrics to every song by his favorite artists, including Rod Stewart, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Frankie Beverly, carrying each tune as if it were his own.

Terry’s home was a gathering place for family and friends in the neighborhood. He loved hosting others and being a source of unity within the community. Many found comfort there, creating lasting memories and meaningful bonds alongside his nieces and nephews. He was a light in their lives, bringing joy and laughter to those around him. He also shared a very special and cherished bond with his brother, Randy Gray.

Terry Wayne Gray Sr., affectionately known as “Onion,” leaves to cherish his memory his deeply loved son, Terry Robinson of Roanoke; his devoted brother Larry Gray and devoted sister-in-law Tracey Gray of Dinwiddie, who lovingly cared for him; his brothers, Randy Gray (Patricia) of Hampton, and Tony Gray (Michelle) of Newport News; his sisters, Jeannie Wallace of Williamsburg, Thelma Amos (John) of Albion, Michigan, Audrey Gray of Williamsburg, Wanda Long (Donald) of Virginia Beach, Tina Henderson (Alphy) of Williamsburg, and Hope Gray of Newport News; his aunt, Cora Jones of Newport News; his uncle, Frank Gray of Newport News; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
