Thelbert Buntin Jr. Obituary

Thelbert Odell Buntin Jr. was born on August 20, 1935, to Sara Griffin Buntin and Thelbert Odell Buntin Sr., in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania.  Affectionately known as “Big Jr., Big June, or Big”, he was the fourth of seven children: Delores Buntin (deceased), Katherine Hunt (deceased), Alvenia Gordon (deceased), Edith Mae Clemons (deceased), Calvin Buntin and Ralph Carter, both of Pittsburgh, PA.

After graduating from Coraopolis High School, in June of 1955, Thelbert joined the Air Force.  While in the Air Force, he played on the basketball team and was a Teletype Equipment Mechanic.  He served honorably until February of 1959. Thelbert later moved to Brooklyn, NY where he met Vivian Josephine Thomas.  They united in holy matrimony on June 29,1963. They moved to Gales Ferry, CT, where they raised three children: Michael Buntin Sr., Dr. Lisa Curry, and Tamar Thomas.

Thelbert worked at the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics for 37 years.  He started as a Sheetmetal Mechanic progressing to a Nuclear Quality Control Inspector.

He was an avid jazz aficionado and played Bass fiddle and drums. He was briefly a member of the group, The Flamingos, which had the hit single, “I Only Have Eyes for You”.  Thelbert also enjoyed sports, painting, drawing, gardening, barbecuing, and leather crafts. He especially looked forward to spending time with family (aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews) and friends.

Thelbert is survived by his wife, Vivian; son, Michael Buntin Sr. (Rosemary); daughter, Dr. Lisa Curry (Clarence); seven grandchildren, Courtney Ilene Buntin, Michael Eugene Buntin Jr., Isabella Rose Buntin, Jocelyn Nadine Curry, Vivian Judith Buntin, Sophia Noreen Curry, and Marcus Hugh Buntin; brothers Calvin (Dolores) and Ralph (Celeste); and a host of other relatives and friends.
