Thurman Leon Wynne Obituary

Thurman Leon Wynne, 76, peacefully transitioned to his heavenly home on Thursday, May 14, 2020, at VCU Medical Center, Richmond, Virginia.  He was the first of eight children born to the late Thurman and Fayetta Wynne on November 22, 1943.  He was also predeceased by two brothers, James Gilbert and Joseph Wynne, and one sister, Sharon W. Jones.

Leon, as he was affectionately called, became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church at an early age.  He attended the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools; graduating from Bruton Heights High School with the Class of 1962.  Upon graduation, he entered into the United States Air Force at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas.  After a brief period, he was given an honorable and medical discharge.  Upon returning home, he became a Civil Service employee at the Naval Weapons Station Yorktown where he worked as a supervisor for many years.

Quiet in nature, Leon was a man of few words.  He was an avid reader, enjoyed watching sports, keeping up with the latest news events, and doing the daily crossword puzzle.  Leon was an awesome chess player and loved all types of music.  His favorite gospel song was “Something About That Name Jesus” by Rance Allen.  He also loved dancing and doing his famous two-step shuffle to “Step In The Name of Love”.  Leon was a very smart man.  He was a mathematician, a skilled contractor, and a carpenter.  He was a master at drawing up blueprints for building houses and performing major home improvements; a trade which he taught his three sons.  Most importantly, he loved God and his family.

Leaving behind to celebrate and cherish his memories are three daughters, Charlene Judkins of Hopewell, Virginia, Yolanda Wright of Newport News, Virginia, and Morgan Ferguson (Milton) of Glen Allen, Virginia; three sons, Patrick James and LaMont Wynne (Brenda) both of Williamsburg, Virginia, and Jevon Wynne of Newport News, Virginia; seven grandchildren, Anthony, Tasha, and Troy Judkins, Terrence and Shakil Wynne, Donte Campbell, and Dwayne Pollard; two great-grandchildren, Spencer and Saniya Judkins; one brother, Larry Wynne (Tonita); three sisters, Vivian Morgan, Joyce Small, and Janice Jackson; one aunt, Mrs. Flora Randall; one brother-in-law, Lawrence E. Jones; special cousins, Wayne Wynne and Don Carter; special friends, Robin Piggott Lee, Curtis Piggott, James Johnson, Raymond Piggott, Nat James and William T. Jones; and many other cousins, nieces, nephews, and long-time friends.

Mr. Wynne may be viewed from 12:00 noon until 5:00 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2020, in Whiting’s Funeral Home.  A funeral service will be Facebook live-streamed at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2020.
