Viola Johnson, loving known as "Vi," gained her heavenly wings on January 13, 2024. Vi was born on September 1, 1943, in Williamsburg, VA, to fhe late Eliza and Saxton Ashlock Sr.
Viola was a compassionate and caring woman who touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with. Her selfless nature and kind heart endeared her to everyone she met. Viola's radiant smile, laughter, and loving spirit left a lasting impact on friends and strangers.
At an early age, Viola gave her life to Christ and joined St. John Baptist Church by baptism in 1958. As a member, she chaired the Women's Day committee and worked with the children's choir. She served as president of the Gospel Choir, which brought joy to her fife as she sang songs of praise and worship. Her faith was an integral part of her life and she found solace and strength within her religious community.
Vi dedicated over forty years of her life serving in the York and Williamsburg-James City County Public School Systems. She worked as a bus driver, cafeteria worker, and in the latter years of her career as a teacher's aide for the Head Start Program. Vi also worked in the textile industry in her early career.
In her free time, Viola loved to travel often embarking on trips with her family and friends to Philadelphia, PA to see her aunt Dot. She enjoyed taking her grandkids on vacation and she actually took a plane to Florida for a cruise to Jamaica. One of her favorite travel companions and partner in crime was her cousin Carolyn Horne. She also enjoyed flower arranging, cooking, dancing, and above all she enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren. Her love for her kids and family was immeasurable, cherishing every moment together with them.
Viola was preceded in death by her parents, Eliza and Saxton Ashlock Sr.; siblings, Russel Ashlock, Sylvia Johnson, and Christine Banks; brother-in-law, Bobbitt Jones; and sister-in-law, Sylvia Ashlock. Their memories will forever be cherished.
Viola is survived by her beloved husband Charles E. Johnson Sr.; three children, Antwane V. Johnson (Maria), Judy A. Johnson, and Charles E. Johnson Jr. (Cleo); nine grandchildren, Canyel (D'Juan), Antwane Jr., Christian (Nicole), Justin, Latisha, Christopher, Chelsea, Calen, and Charles Jr; nine great-grandchildren, Jaydis, Saniah, Greyson, Zara, Antwane III, Ivy, Pierce, Ace, and Parris; brother Saxton Ashlock (Joyce); sister Celestine Jones; stepbrothers, Ozell Graham and Tony Graham; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
Viola will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and selflessness will continue to inspire those who follow in her footsteps.
