William Van Wood, affectionately known as “Billy,” was born on February 19, 1954, to Mary Matilda Bartlett and Thomas Preston Wood in Hampton, Virginia.
He attended Hampton Public Schools and was a graduate of Phoebus High School, Class of 1972. He continued his education at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication. While at Hampton, he became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
William held several positions in the television industry. He was employed as a Television Director at WALA in Mobile, Alabama, and later served as a Director and Camera Operator with WTKR News 3 in Portsmouth, Virginia. At the time of his passing, he was employed with NDS Computers in Hampton, Virginia, as an IT Specialist.
William was an avid photographer. He was often found capturing sunrises and sunsets, family events, and the Pirates during Hampton Bay Days.
Left to cherish William’s memory are his cousins, Cheryl Green-Bolanos (Leonard), Yvonne Green, Jamie Green-Garlington (Anthony), and Kendall Garlington; nephew Preston Wood; a special nephew Truth Combs; nieces, Teresa Wood and Elizabeth Wood; and a host of other relatives.
All services for Mr. Wood will be private.
